Since ages our ancestors have been using home medicines to cure common ailments or symptoms of common ailments. This works out less expensive than other alternative forms of medicine. Above all, they are harmless and without any adverse reaction or side effects.

The best way is just we could plant all the required herbs in our kitchen garden. But if we are buying them from market, then we have to be very careful about the pesticides and preservatives, they use while growing or while preserving.

                                          Mother Taking Care Of Child

Here are some cold remedies we can count on........
  • Sleep: Sleep is the mantra for immunity. Making sure the child gets enough rest may be the most important thing a parent can do for him when he is sick.
  • Moist air or steam: A warm vaporizer in child’s bed room can help clean the nasal blockage, reducing congestion. We can also steam up the bathroom before taking the little one for bath.
  • Chicken soup: Chicken soup stimulates the release of mucus, reducing congestion as it has anti-inflammatory powers.
  • Honey: Honey in pure form is very good to ward off cold. Just a half a teaspoon of honey everyday in the morning treats cold to some extent.
  • Salt: Salt acts as a natural anti-inflammatory to release mucus and ease breathing. For nasal congestion, make a saline rinse with a full teaspoon of salt per pint of clean warm water and use it with a dropper.
  • Eucalyptus (Nilgiri) oil: This acts as a anti-inflammatory and decongestant in nature. Putting 2 drops of niligiri oil in warm water for bath helps reduce congestion in kids.
  • Shunti(ginger) juice: This juice with 1 teaspoon of honey helps to fight cold. Even Onion juice with honey has a good effect to fight against cold.
  • Ajwain Leaves or Carom Leaves(doddapatre) : Fry ajwain leaf on tawa for 2mins on low flame. Then squeeze a tea spoon of ajwain leaf extract. This extract along with a tea spoon of honey works well. Along with the above extract, thulsi leaf extract also can be added which is effective against cold.
  • Ajwain Leaf Kashaay : In a vessel, add a tea spoon of jeera (cumin seeds) and heat it. When it starts sputtering, add Flaked/Beaten Rice (known as "paper  avalakki/poha " in Kannada/Marathi), mix it well. Add water and Ajwain leaves and let it boil for 8 to 10 minutes. Add sugar or preferably Sugar Candy (Kallu Sakkare in Kannada) for sweetness. This hot kashaay can be given twice or thrice a day, dilute it by adding water.
But the most important thing when it comes to our baby, trained Doctor/pediatrician knows the best. Don’t try out all of them together. Take your kid’s doctors advice before implementing the above remedies. The dosage also depends on child's age. There is a saying “A normal cold will run its course over a weak or so, no matter what we do. If we treat it, the child will get well. If we don’t treat it, he will still get well.”
